On April 19th, 2025, one of our trap cameras captured a collared peccary, which was a first for us, of this species. Collared peccaries typically weigh around 20 kg and are primarily active during the day. They live in groups of six to nine animals but can sometimes have up to fifty individuals in a group. Collared peccaries typically sleep in burrows, caves, or among logs. Their diet consists of cactuses, fruits, seeds, roots, tubers, bulbs, grasses, fungi, and insects. However, they have also been known to eat eggs, snakes, fish, frogs, lizards, dead birds, and rodents. The main predator of the collared peccary in the Atlantic Rainforest is the puma (Puma concolor). While they usually ignore humans, they will react if they feel threatened. Collared peccaries use their tusks to defend themselves and can release an intense scent or give a short bark when alarmed.
