Listed as “near threatened” by the IUCN, Mantled Hawks are known to regularly hunt over Itororo’s forests. Although they may not be easily spotted, their presence is a strong indication of a high-quality forest. This bird of prey is highly territorial and endemic to the Atlantic Forest, with a habitat that ranges from sea level to around 1500m altitude. They are often observed above secondary woodlands, particularly those with the Parana Pine (Araucaria angustifolia). Mantled Hawks prey on a variety of animals, including tanagers, trogons, doves, rufous-sided crakes, lizards, snakes, small rodents, and large insects. The decrease and fragmentation of the Mantled Hawk population is primarily caused by the loss of their habitat.
