Chapada Diamantina

Over 60 orchid species

Chapada Diamantina is located at 430 km westward of Salvador da Bahia.
The calm city of Lençóis, which became rich in the 19th century through diamond mining, is today the starting point to the National Park, founded on September 17, 1985.
Chapada Diamantina is worth a visit not only because of the beauty of its landscapes as Table Mountains, canyons, waterfalls and caves. There thrive over 60 orchid species and rare bromeliads from the Cerrado (savanna) to the highlands Campos de Altitude (highlands) can be found a highly varied flora, offering plenty of attractions to plant lovers.

Poço Encantado

Brazil’s highest waterfall

Visitors can hike a 30-km trail from Lençóis up to the 1120-m high Pai Inácio Hill, the symbol of Chapada Diamantina. From there, visitors have a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains and the region. In Rio Mucugêzinho and at the Devil’s Spring (Poço do Diabo) visitors can bath in charming pools.
After a refreshing bath, visitors can visit several grottos, as for example the Gruta do Lapão right after Lençóis. This is one of Brazil’s largest quartzite caves. Also worth a visit are the speleothemes at Gruta Lapa Doce (70 km away) and Gruta da Pratinha (76 km away) as well as the Poço Encantado (Enchanted Pothole) with its 42-m deep, blue lagoon (120 km away).

Another popular trekking trail takes to Brazil’s highest waterfall, the Cachoeira da Fumaça "Smoky Waterfall." There, water falls from a height of 442 m and spreads itself as mist. During the dry season, from March through October, this waterfall may dry up completely, once the yearly average precipitation rates in this area reach only 700-1.000 mm. In the rain season the Quaresmeiras (Tibouchina) bloom everywhere with their large purple flowers.
Maybe the most fascinating, but also a very strenuous tour, takes through the Pati Valley. A 50-km long path connects a place called Capão to the small village called Andaraí. There, visitors have a far-reaching view of the charms of Chapada Diamantina’s landscape.
